Der Tänzer, Choreograf, Ballettmeister und Ballettdirektor Ray Barra ist am Mittwoch, den 26. März, im Alter von 95 Jahren in Spanien gestorben. Der Amerikaner wurde als Raymond Martin Barallobre Ramirez 1930 in San Francisco geboren, wo er auch Ballett studierte. Er tanzte im San Francisco Opera Ballet und sechs Jahre beim American Ballet Theatre, wo er zum Solisten aufstieg. 1959 kam er nach Stuttgart und war dort der männliche Star von John Crankos ersten Jahren als Direktor – Barra kreierte den Romeo in Crankos Version des Klassikers und er war, ebenfalls mit Marcia Haydée, der erste Onegin. Auch in Kenneth MacMillans „Las Hermanas“ und „Das Lied von der Erde“ wurden wichtige Rollen für ihn geschaffen. Der große, stattliche Tänzer und gute Partner tanzte mit zahlreichen berühmten Ballerinen und war einer der prägenden Tänzer der frühen Cranko-Jahre.

Ein Riss der Achillessehne beendete seine Bühnenkarriere abrupt. Kenneth MacMillan, den Barra bereits früher als Ballettmeister und Assistent unterstützt hatte, holte ihn 1966 als Ballettmeister an die Deutsche Oper Berlin. Später lehrte Barra in Frankfurt und bei John Neumeier in Hamburg, nach einer Zeit als Gastchoreograf des Ballet Nacional de España Clásico in Madrid übernahm er dessen künstlerische Leitung. Von 1994 bis 1996 war er Ballettdirektor in Berlin.

Barra fing bereits in Stuttgart zu choreografieren an auch für Opern-, Operetten- und Musicalproduktionen an der Stuttgarter Oper, darunter „Kiss Me, Kate“ und „Der Zigeunerbaron“. Weitere Produktionen entstanden für die Opernhäuser in Berlin, Frankfurt, München, Hamburg, Wien und die Salzburger Festspiele, für das Ballett des Nationaltheaters München („Don Quijote“, „Schwanensee“ und „Raymonda“) sowie für das Ballet Nacional de España Clasico, darunter die Ballette „Der Nussknacker“, „Die Schneekönigin“ und „Canto General“. Im „Cranko“-Film von Joachim Lang wurde Ray Barra von Jason Reilly verkörpert. Der Tänzer starb in Spanien, wo er seit vielen Jahren lebte.
Ray Barra, Renowned Dancer and Choreographer, Dies at 95
Ray Barra, the distinguished dancer, choreographer, ballet master and ballet director, passed away in Spain on Wednesday, 26 March, at the age of 95. Born Raymond Martin Barallobre Ramirez in San Francisco in 1930, the American artist trained in ballet in his hometown. He danced with the San Francisco Opera Ballet and later spent six years with the American Ballet Theatre, where he rose to the rank of soloist.
In 1959, Barra moved to Stuttgart, where he became the leading male dancer during John Cranko’s early years as director. Barra created the role of Romeo in Cranko’s version of the classic ballet and was also the first to portray Onegin, partnering with Marcia Haydée. Key roles were created for him in Kenneth MacMillan’s Las Hermanas and Das Lied von der Erde. The tall, commanding dancer, known for his strong partnering skills, performed with many of the most celebrated ballerinas of his time and was one of the defining dancers of Cranko’s early years.
An Achilles tendon rupture brought Barra’s stage career to an abrupt end. Kenneth MacMillan, whom Barra had already supported as a ballet master and assistant, invited him to join the Deutsche Oper Berlin as ballet master in 1966. Barra later taught in Frankfurt and at John Neumeier’s Hamburg Ballet. After a period as guest choreographer for the Ballet Nacional de España Clásico in Madrid, he took over as its artistic director. From 1994 to 1996, he served as ballet director in Berlin.
Barra began choreographing while still in Stuttgart, creating works for opera, operetta and musical productions at the Stuttgart Opera, including Kiss Me, Kate and Der Zigeunerbaron. His productions were staged at opera houses in Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg and Vienna, as well as at the Salzburg Festival. He also created ballets for the Bavarian State Ballet (Don Quixote, Swan Lake and Raymonda) and for the Ballet Nacional de España Clásico, including The Nutcracker, The Snow Queen and Canto General.
Ray Barra was portrayed by Jason Reilly in Joachim Lang’s film Cranko. The dancer passed away in Spain, where he had lived for many years.
