What is the one factor that makes a piece of choreography memorable to you?

I allowed myself time to meditate on the many varied dance works I’ve seen recently. If I’d thought it was going to be a difficult experiment, I was wrong. Two pieces of modern ballet I’ve seen in London floated immediately to mind; both had captured me with the same component: Emotion.

Liam Scarlett’s ballet Consolations and Liebestraum was danced by three male/female couples and depicted the lifestyle of a relationship – it’s blossoming and later, fracturing love. I was entranced by the intricate, unpredictable interactions, but equally by the deep love and sorrow emanating from the dancers. David Dawson’s Four Last Songs to Strauss’s music of the same name, is often described as a poignant farewell to life.
