In October 2019, Steven McRae’s Achilles snapped live on stage during a performance of Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon at the Royal Opera House. The journey since, for the popular Royal Ballet Principal, has not been straightforward. He speaks to me about his recovery and a new film that follows him through it, as well as how the dance industry needs to change to best support those with injuries.
“I was in a lot of discomfort leading up to that performance anyway,” he recalls. “But I went on stage. I got through all of act one, which typically in MacMillan ballets is the biggest challenge. So I thought, “OK, this is great. At least I’ve got through the toughest bit and I actually started to relax in act two. I felt that I was really starting to enjoy the performance and was getting lost in the story.”
