Misty Copeland Joins American Ballet Theatre Board of Trustees

Misty Copeland, dancer, author, and advocate, has taken on a new role with American Ballet Theatre, joining its Board of Trustees. The announcement comes shortly after her historic farewell performance on 22 October, which closed ABT’s 85th Anniversary Fall Season at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater.

Copeland’s career at ABT is legendary. She joined the ABT Studio Company in 2000 and, in 2015, became the first Black woman promoted to Principal Dancer — a milestone that resonated across the world of classical ballet. Her artistry and advocacy have inspired countless young dancers and audiences alike.

“Misty Copeland has changed the face of classical ballet through her extraordinary talent and her dedication to broadening access to the arts,” said Susan Jaffe, ABT’s Artistic Director. “We are delighted that she will continue to lend her perspective and experience to the Company in this new capacity.”

As a Trustee, Copeland will contribute to ABT’s long-term vision, helping guide its strategic priorities and supporting its financial and operational strength. She will also champion ABT’s values and initiatives, including ABT RISE — Representation, Immersion, Sustainability, Excellence — which reflects the Company’s commitment to inclusion, community, and the well-being of all who engage with its work.

“ABT has been my home for nearly twenty-five years,” Copeland said. “It’s where I found my voice, grew as an artist, and discovered the transformative power of ballet. I’m honoured to continue supporting the Company and its mission in this new role.”

Melissa Smith, Chair of ABT’s Board of Trustees, added: “Misty’s artistry and advocacy have inspired millions. Her insight and experience will be invaluable as we work to ensure ABT’s long-term strength and growth.”

Barry Hughson, ABT’s Executive Director, said: “Misty brings authenticity, deep knowledge of the Company, and a unique perspective. Her voice will be a tremendous asset as we continue to expand ABT’s reach and deepen our connection with communities across the nation.”

With this appointment, Misty Copeland moves from the stage to a leadership role that will shape the future of one of the world’s most renowned ballet companies, continuing her remarkable journey in the service of the art form she has transformed.
