Adolphe Binder – Between Artistic Freedom and Social Responsibility

Exploring the evolving landscape of contemporary ballet through visionary leadership.

interview by Armando BRASWELL

As you conclude your chapter with Ballett Basel, what are you most proud of?

I’m proud to have created a unique programme, tailor-made for Basel – a city renowned for its deep engagement with the arts. True to its slogan, Swiss – but different, the programming reflected that spirit. I take great pride in having shaped an ensemble that is both vibrant and artistically committed, while also opening our doors to broader, more diverse, and forward-thinking audiences.

Looking back, what were the defining moments of your time here?

Above all, the trust of so many remarkable artists – their openness to embark on this journey with me. That trust became the foundation of everything.
