The first time I saw Rocio Aleman in a major leading role, she was dancing Aurora in Marcia Haydée’s The Sleeping Beauty in Stuttgart, a few summers ago. It was not a performance built on easy brilliance. There was a sense of control, of deliberate restraint – an approach concerned with shaping a character from within, not with display. It was deeply impressive: her beauty, certainly, but also her command, her way of constructing a role.
