HOHYUN KANG

Surprisingly, the beautiful soloist of the Paris Opera Ballet didn’t wholly like herself as a ballerina. At least until some years ago. Now, after having her first leading role in Mayerling and fresh from her debut as Kitri, Hohyun Kang finally  appreciates herself the way she is and fully loves her profession, even when it comes to being sad.

Interview by Alessandro BIZZOTTO

In October 2022 a young member of the corps de ballet was catapulted in the spotlight when she was chosen to be baroness Mary Vetsera, prince Rudolf’s mistress, in Kenneth MacMillan’s Mayerling, that entered the repertoire of the Paris Opera Ballet that very year.

Now a sujet, or soloist, Hohyun Kang obviously still cherishes that experience. She’ll live it again next Autumn, when Mayerling will be back at the Palais Garnier and once more Kang will be the teenager who accepts to kill herself with Franz Joseph and Sisi’s son and heir.
