Gustav III, who reigned during the latter half of the 18th century, was both a political reformer and a passionate patron of the arts, something clearly reflected in the world that Gustavia recreates. The result is a production that fuses historical drama with dance’s unique ability to express what language cannot.

What strikes the audience first is the work’s visual richness. The scenography is particularly compelling in its fluidity: scenes shift not only through lighting and choreographic transitions, but through stage elements and props lowered from above or brought in from the wings. This mechanism becomes part of the storytelling itself, lending the production an almost cinematic quality of real-time editing, where spaces transform swiftly from the grandeur of the royal court to more stripped-back, intimate environments. Lighting, scenography, and choreography merge into a continuous flow, keeping the stage constantly alive and in motion.

Pär Isberg once again demonstrates why he ranks among Sweden’s foremost ballet masters – not only in the pas de deux, but in the architecture of dance as a whole. In Gustavia, he shapes solo passages and ensemble structures alike with precision and emotional sensitivity. There is a rare understanding here of how the body can carry both narrative and relationship, whether in intimate dialogue between two dancers or in large-scale ensemble formations. Isberg never allows technique to overshadow expression; instead, every movement becomes a necessary extension of emotion and dramaturgy.

The ensemble scenes are equally impressive. The production contains a large number of group sequences, all performed with exceptional discipline and refinement. Formations shift with effortless elegance, transitions are precise, and the dancers’ collective awareness creates a continuous, living flow across the stage. It is evident that every detail has been carefully rehearsed. The company dances with a level of concentration and presence that makes even the most complex passages feel organic and natural. These scenes provide the production with its sense of grandeur while never losing its human pulse.

<figure Larsson

The costumes, too, deserve special mention. Sumptuous without being excessive, they contribute significantly to the atmosphere of the work. Rich in detail, colour, and historical reference, they conjure a world that feels both authentic and poetic. When the ensemble fills the stage, tableaux emerge that resemble living paintings from the Gustavian era. The costumes enhance the elegance of the movement and give the production a visual radiance that lingers long after the curtain falls.

A particularly strong impression is made by Guillaume Diop, the first Black dancer to be appointed étoile at the Paris Opéra Ballet. Brought in specifically for this production, he returns for the revival, performing in a number of its shows. His stage presence carries both strength and vulnerability, adding a human depth that enriches the entire work.

The pas de deux sections are among the production’s most powerful elements, carrying a distinct emotional charge. In these duets, a closeness between the dancers emerges so precisely crafted that it lands with immediate and profound impact. A particularly memorable moment occurs when Gustav III and Badin slowly shape a heart together with their bodies – a gesture that distils the work’s central themes of belonging, love, and power. The softness of the movement and the sensitivity of the partnering create an intensity that is not merely aesthetic but deeply affecting, allowing these scenes to linger long after they end.

Yet the success of the production does not rest on any single performer. The entire ensemble contributes to the world surrounding Badin and his fate. The soloists give their roles clear contours, creating characters that feel alive rather than historical archetypes. Particularly striking is the way the dancers move between the formal elegance of the court and the more personal, emotionally charged scenes. Each character acquires its own movement quality and expressive identity, adding depth and variety to the narrative.

The Royal Ballet’s ensemble further affirms the company’s high international standing. Whether portraying courtiers, aristocrats, or the forces surrounding Badin, the dancing is marked by musicality, precision, and strong stage presence. It is a collective achievement in which no one seeks to outshine the whole; rather, the whole is strengthened by every individual contribution. The performance is carried by a shared intelligence in which each dancer, regardless of the size of their role, contributes to the rich fabric of movement and human relationship that makes Gustavia so compelling.

Throughout, music and choreography interact in a way that prevents the story from ever feeling museum-like. On the contrary, Gustavia speaks directly to our own time – a story about human dignity, about being seen, and about finding one’s place in a world shaped by hierarchy and prejudice.

Gustavia is more than a historical ballet. It is a work that demonstrates how dance can carry both memory and future, both beauty and gravity. The combination of grand ensemble scenes, intimate pas de deux, exquisite costumes, and Guillaume Diop’s magnetic stage presence makes this one of the most compelling dance experiences of the season.

When the curtain falls, what remains is not only the beauty of the images, but the people behind them – and the history brought back to life through dance.

<div
