It is a recognition of a career carved with rare artistry — one that transcends borders, dismantles barriers, and recasts ballet in contemporary light.

Acosta, Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet since 2020, has not simply led the company; he has reimagined it. Under his stewardship, the repertoire has expanded boldly, embracing both classical lineage and radical innovation. Black Sabbath – The Ballet, perhaps his most unexpected move, typifies Acosta’s instinct to meet audiences where they are — and then lift them. Claire Walker and Hannah Essex, Co-CEOs of Society of London Theatre & UK Theatre, remarked: “Carlos has propelled ballet to new heights, most recently as Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet, where his ambitious programming continues to shape the dance audiences of the future.”

This future is not hypothetical. It is being danced now — in new works, in new bodies, in spaces that had long been closed to such stories. For Acosta, the honour is personal but not solitary.
“To be recognised by my own industry like this is humbling,” he said. “This award is also for the communities and venues, large and small, whose warmth and commitment sustain our work.”

Born in Havana in 1973, Acosta’s journey from the streets of Cuba to global stages is by now almost mythic. After winning the Gold Medal at the Prix de Lausanne in 1990, he performed with the National Ballet of Cuba, American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opera Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, and English National Ballet. But it was at The Royal Ballet that he left his most indelible mark — a 17-year tenure that saw him inhabit nearly every major role in the canon and debut his first full-length choreography: Don Quixote.

His 2003 work Tocororo, rooted in his Cuban heritage, broke box office records at Sadler’s Wells and garnered an Olivier nomination. In 2007, he received the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for Carlos Acosta and Friends of the Royal Ballet. But his legacy is not confined to performance. Through Acosta Danza and its youth counterpart Acosta Danza Yunior, alongside the Acosta Dance Foundation, his Dance Academy in Havana and a Dance Centre in London, he has become a conduit — connecting gifted young artists with world-class opportunities. His ambition: to democratise access to excellence. The scope of his work stretches beyond the stage. His memoir and subsequent film Yuli garnered critical acclaim for their unflinching portrayal of identity, exile, and vocation. He has been honoured with the CBE, the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award, the De Valois Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Critic’s Circle Award for Outstanding Services to the Arts.

As Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet, Acosta continues to test the elasticity of the form. His creation of BRB2 — a junior company nurturing emerging talent — and his honorary doctorate from the University of Birmingham further root his influence within the UK’s cultural infrastructure. Carlos Acosta is not merely a dancer, nor only a director.
