Doch Schl\u00e4pfer blieb nicht stehen. Er stellte das Ballett neu auf \u2013 stilistisch offen, dramaturgisch vielseitig und menschlich durchl\u00e4ssig. Die Neuausrichtung war deutlich sp\u00fcrbar. Kritikerinnen und Kritiker w\u00fcrdigten das Wiener Staatsballett unter seiner Leitung 2022 als \u201eGlanzlicht des Jahres\u201c. Und das Publikum kam zur\u00fcck: In der Spielzeit 2024\/25 f\u00fcllten 158.000 Menschen die R\u00e4nge bei 111 Vorstellungen. Die Staatsoper war ausverkauft, das NEST fast ebenso.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1188\" data-end=\"1746\">Schl\u00e4pfer stellte Klassiker wie <em data-start=\"1220\" data-end=\"1233\">Schwanensee<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1235\" data-end=\"1243\">Onegin<\/em> oder <em data-start=\"1249\" data-end=\"1257\">Jewels<\/em> nicht infrage, sondern in Beziehung \u2013 zu zeitgen\u00f6ssischen Handschriften, zu Urauff\u00fchrungen, zu Stimmen von heute. In f\u00fcnf Jahren entstanden 23 Premieren, darunter 17 neue Werke. Zehn davon choreografierte er selbst, andere steuerten K\u00fcnstlerinnen und K\u00fcnstler wie Marko Goecke, Adi Hanan oder Martin Chaix bei. Gro\u00dfe Namen wie Lucinda Childs, William Forsythe oder John Neumeier waren erstmals mit Werken in Wien zu sehen. Alexei Ratmansky schuf sogar ein neues Ballett f\u00fcr den Opernball.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1748\" data-end=\"2056\">Die Musik blieb zentrales Bezugssystem \u2013 nicht nur im Repertoire, sondern als Impulsgeber f\u00fcr neues Denken. Schl\u00e4pfers choreografische Antworten auf H\u00e4ndel, Mahler oder Beethoven gingen tief. Schl\u00e4pfer verstand die Compagnie als lebendigen Organismus, der erfahrene T\u00e4nzerinnen und T\u00e4nzer ebenso braucht wie junge Talente. In Formaten wie <em data-start=\"2245\" data-end=\"2266\">Choreographie 1 &amp; 2<\/em> zeigten Ensemblemitglieder eigene Arbeiten. Neue Reihen wie <em data-start=\"2327\" data-end=\"2339\">Tanzpodium<\/em>, Filmabende oder Gespr\u00e4chsformate suchten N\u00e4he zum Publikum. Kooperationen mit Museen und Schulen verankerten den Tanz st\u00e4rker in der Stadt.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2483\" data-end=\"3069\">Ein wichtiger Teil seiner Arbeit galt der Ballettakademie der Wiener Staatsoper. Gemeinsam mit Christiana Stefanou, die 2024 f\u00fcr ihre Arbeit mit dem ARGO-Preis ausgezeichnet wurde, strukturierte er die Ausbildung neu \u2013 k\u00fcnstlerisch, p\u00e4dagogisch und r\u00e4umlich. Die rund 140 Sch\u00fcler*innen aus \u00fcber 28 L\u00e4ndern trainieren heute unter besten Bedingungen. Moderne Schwingb\u00f6den, ein neues Gesundheitskonzept und ein starker k\u00fcnstlerischer Anspruch pr\u00e4gen den Alltag. Die Matineen auf der Opernb\u00fchne wurden zu H\u00f6hepunkten im Kalender \u2013 mit klassischen Werken ebenso wie zeitgen\u00f6ssischen St\u00fccken.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3071\" data-end=\"3350\">Auch das neue Haus NEST steht f\u00fcr den Aufbruch dieser Jahre. Dort pr\u00e4sentierten die Jugendkompanie und Akademiesch\u00fcler*innen Schl\u00e4pfers <em data-start=\"3207\" data-end=\"3227\">Peter und der Wolf<\/em> und Stefanous <em data-start=\"3242\" data-end=\"3267\">Mein erstes Dornr\u00f6schen<\/em> \u2013 erste Schritte auf einer neuen B\u00fchne, die jungen T\u00e4nzerinnen und T\u00e4nzern geh\u00f6rt.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3352\" data-end=\"3540\">Martin Schl\u00e4pfers Jahre in Wien haben das Ballett ver\u00e4ndert. Nicht durch gro\u00dfe Gesten, sondern durch genaues Hinh\u00f6ren, kluges Verkn\u00fcpfen und ein tiefes Vertrauen in die Kraft der Bewegung.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p data-start=\"228\" data-end=\"326\"><strong data-start=\"228\" data-end=\"326\">Martin Schl\u00e4pfer Bids Farewell to Vienna State Ballet \u2013 A Retrospective on Five Defining Years<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"328\" data-end=\"670\">With <em data-start=\"333\" data-end=\"354\">The Sleeping Beauty<\/em> at the Vienna State Opera and a series of new works at the Volksoper, Martin Schl\u00e4pfer\u2019s tenure as director of the Vienna State Ballet came to an end on 30 June 2025. His five-year leadership shaped the company with musical sensitivity, a bold sense of openness and a perspective that extended far beyond the stage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"672\" data-end=\"1187\">When he arrived in 2020, the pandemic had paralysed the arts. Yet Schl\u00e4pfer did not falter. He redefined the company \u2013 expanding its stylistic range, diversifying its structure and sharpening its artistic focus. His impact soon became evident. In 2022, critics named the Vienna State Ballet under his direction a \u201cHighlight of the Year\u201d. Audiences returned in strength: the 2024\/25 season welcomed 158,000 visitors to 111 performances. The State Opera played to full houses, while the NEST venue saw a 99% capacity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1824\">Rather than questioning the classics \u2013 <em data-start=\"1228\" data-end=\"1239\">Swan Lake<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1241\" data-end=\"1249\">Onegin<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1251\" data-end=\"1259\">Jewels<\/em> \u2013 Schl\u00e4pfer placed them in dialogue with the present: with new works, contemporary voices, and different ways of telling stories through movement. Across five seasons, the company unveiled 23 premieres, including 17 world premieres. Ten were choreographed by Schl\u00e4pfer himself, while others came from artists such as Marko Goecke, Adi Hanan, and Martin Chaix. Renowned choreographers like Lucinda Childs, William Forsythe and John Neumeier had works performed in Vienna for the first time. Alexei Ratmansky even created a new ballet for the 2024 Vienna Opera Ball.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1826\" data-end=\"2189\">Music remained a guiding force \u2013 not simply as accompaniment, but as a space for choreographic response. Whether interpreting Handel or Mahler, Beethoven or Strauss, Schl\u00e4pfer approached scores with depth and resonance. Marco Goecke\u2019s premiere <em data-start=\"2070\" data-end=\"2086\">Fly Paper Bird<\/em>, set to Mahler\u2019s Adagietto, offered a striking example of how movement and music can breathe together.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2191\" data-end=\"2679\">The company itself grew more open. Schl\u00e4pfer saw the ensemble as a living collective, where mature performers and emerging talent met on equal footing. He nurtured young voices through initiatives like <em data-start=\"2393\" data-end=\"2413\">Choreography 1 &amp; 2<\/em>, giving dancers space to create and perform their own works. New formats \u2013 including <em data-start=\"2499\" data-end=\"2513\">Dance Podium<\/em>, film screenings and artist talks \u2013 brought ballet closer to the city. Collaborations with museums and schools forged lasting ties with the wider cultural landscape.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2681\" data-end=\"3312\">Schl\u00e4pfer also took responsibility for the Ballet Academy of the Vienna State Opera. Working with Christiana Stefanou \u2013 honoured in 2024 with the ARGO Prize for her artistic achievements \u2013 he led a full-scale reform of the training programme. Today, around 140 students from more than 28 countries study under world-class conditions. A diverse curriculum, a newly implemented health care approach and state-of-the-art sprung floors support both physical and mental wellbeing. Annual matin\u00e9es on the main stage became artistic highlights, combining classical repertoire with contemporary creations by Schl\u00e4pfer, Stefanou and others.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3314\" data-end=\"3574\">The company\u2019s newest venue, NEST, opened fresh opportunities. Here, the Youth Company and Academy students premiered Schl\u00e4pfer\u2019s <em data-start=\"3443\" data-end=\"3463\">Peter and the Wolf<\/em> and Stefanou\u2019s <em data-start=\"3479\" data-end=\"3505\">My First Sleeping Beauty<\/em> \u2013 works tailored to a new generation of dancers and audiences alike.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3576\" data-end=\"3734\">Martin Schl\u00e4pfer\u2019s time in Vienna transformed the ballet \u2013 not through spectacle, but with care, integrity and a firm belief in the expressive power of dance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mit Dornr\u00f6schen in der Staatsoper und neuen St\u00fccken in der Volksoper endete am 30.
