A choreographer fluent in both classical vocabulary and contemporary movement idioms, Spuck draws on his training in the Cranko tradition as much as on formative influences like Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. He brings an acute musical sensibility to his stagings — whether in ballet or opera — and approaches leadership not as administration, but as artistic dialogue. In Berlin, his tenure has been marked by a distinct willingness to engage: with audiences, with social questions, with dancers as collaborators. He understands the theatre not merely as a place for representation, but as a space where aesthetics and ethics intersect.

Gabriele Brandstetter, awarded for outstanding contributions to the development of dance, is internationally acclaimed as a pioneer in the field of dance studies. Her academic and curatorial work has been instrumental in establishing the discipline within the German university system and far beyond. What sets Brandstetter apart is her ability to maintain movement at the core of her thinking: in her essays, symposia and exhibitions, dance is never frozen into theory. Instead, it remains a living practice — one that resists containment and invites interdisciplinary discourse. The €5,000 award recognises a career that has opened intellectual and institutional space for dance, and has brought it into sustained conversation with the broader humanities.

Tadashi Endo, who passed away on 25 May 2025, receives a posthumous lifetime achievement award. As a central figure in the dissemination of Butoh in Europe, he founded the MAMU Butoh Centre and Festival in Göttingen, creating a vital hub for experimentation, teaching, and exchange. Endo’s work was both deeply ritualistic and quietly political: his pieces addressed themes of war, displacement and loss not through overt narrative, but through the charged stillness and transformative quality that define Butoh at its most powerful. His influence resonates through a generation of performers across Europe who found in his practice not only an aesthetic, but a moral and emotional compass.

The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, 28 February 2026, at the Aalto Theatre in Essen. For the first time, the date has been moved from the season’s opening to early spring — a shift that aims to ease scheduling pressures and allow for deeper artistic engagement. On the eve of the ceremony, the German Dance Association will host a public “Dance Prize Cultural Salon”, offering an opportunity to engage in conversation with the laureates. The gala programme will be announced in autumn 2025 and will include interpretation into German Sign Language.

The German Dance Prize is made possible through support from the City of Essen, the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the Essen Cultural Foundation, the Norbert Lammert Foundation and other sponsors.

In spotlighting artists, thinkers and visionaries, the 2026 edition of the Dance Prize reaffirms its commitment to a broad and inclusive understanding of excellence in dance — one that embraces practice and theory, stage and studio, movement and meaning.

(🇩🇪 🇬🇧) Mit der Auszeichnung von Christian Spuck, Gabriele Brandstetter und Tadashi Endo setzt der Deutsche Tanzpreis 2026 ein Zeichen für Vielfalt in Haltung, Praxis und Perspektive.
