The Royal Swedish Ballet has announced the appointment of Anders Hellstr\u00f6m as its new Artistic Director. Hellstr\u00f6m has amassed an impressive international career and is deeply connected to his home city of Stockholm. His professional dance career commenced with the Royal Swedish Ballet, after which he joined the Hamburg Ballet as a Principal Dancer for a period of 10 years, from 1984 to 1993. Subsequently, he joined William Forsythe’s pioneering Ballet Frankfurt from 1993 to 1999.<\/p>\n

He assumed a leadership role in 1999 when he was appointed Artistic Director of the G\u00f6teborg Opera Dance Company, a position he held until 2002. Thereafter, from 2004 to 2009, he assumed the leadership position at Nederlands Dans Theater. Concurrently, he engaged in global travels, assuming roles as a teacher and choreographer, collaborating closely with renowned ballet companies, including the Royal Swedish Ballet, the Norwegian National Ballet, the Berlin State Ballet, the Finnish National Ballet, and the Ballet National de Marseille.<\/p>\n

Following a protracted period of international engagement, Hellstr\u00f6m expresses his profound sense of honour in returning to his place of origin and assuming the role of Artistic Director of the Royal Swedish Ballet. He anticipates that the forthcoming years, during which the Opera House at Gustav Adolfs Torg will undergo renovation, will be both challenging and exciting, and he expresses his eagerness to collaborate closely with the dancers, as well as the artistic and administrative teams, to shape the future of this renowned institution. Fredrik Lindgren, the CEO of the Royal Swedish Opera, says how important it is to have Anders as the new Artistic director. He states that Anders possesses the necessary experience and artistic leadership qualities to guide the company into a new and exciting era. Furthermore, he asserts that Hellstr\u00f6m is the ideal candidate to guide the ballet through a period of transformation.<\/p>\n

The orchestra’s musical director, Alan Gilbert, has also expressed satisfaction with the appointment. He characterises Hellstr\u00f6m as “an exciting artist whose ideas and experience will enhance the company while ensuring the maintenance of the highest artistic standards.” Gilbert expresses his enthusiasm for their collaboration, particularly in relation to the Gasometer stage project, which he perceives as a significant source of creative potential.<\/p>\n

Anders Hellstr\u00f6m is set to assume the role of Artistic Director at the Royal Swedish Ballet on 1 August, with a five-year tenure. He succeeds Nicolas Le Riche, whose appointment expires this summer after eight years as Artistic Director.<\/p>\n

Mit der Ernennung von Anders Hellstr\u00f6m zum K\u00fcnstlerischen Leiter erh\u00e4lt das K\u00f6nigliche Schwedische Ballett eine international profilierte Pers\u00f6nlichkeit, die auf eine beeindruckende Karriere sowohl als T\u00e4nzer wie auch als k\u00fcnstlerischer Gestalter zur\u00fcckblickt. Seine t\u00e4nzerischen Anf\u00e4nge nahm er einst bei jener Compagnie, der er nun erneut vorstehen wird. Es folgten Jahre als Erster Solist am Hamburg Ballett (1984\u20131993) und als Mitglied von William Forsythes richtungsweisendem Ballet Frankfurt (1993\u20131999).<\/p>\n

Nach seiner aktiven B\u00fchnenzeit \u00fcbernahm Hellstr\u00f6m bedeutende Leitungsfunktionen: zun\u00e4chst an der G\u00f6teborg Opera Dance Company (1999\u20132002), anschlie\u00dfend als K\u00fcnstlerischer Direktor des weltweit renommierten Nederlands Dans Theater (2004\u20132009). Dar\u00fcber hinaus war er international als freischaffender Ballettmeister und Gastdozent t\u00e4tig und pflegte enge, langj\u00e4hrige Kooperationen mit bedeutenden H\u00e4usern wie dem Norwegischen Nationalballett, dem Staatsballett Berlin, dem Finnischen Nationalballett, dem Ballet National de Marseille \u2013 und immer wieder auch mit dem K\u00f6niglichen Schwedischen Ballett.<\/p>\n

Hellstr\u00f6m betrachtet seine R\u00fcckkehr nach Stockholm als pers\u00f6nliche wie berufliche Heimkehr. Nach vielen Jahren im Ausland sei es ihm ein gro\u00dfes Anliegen, an die k\u00fcnstlerischen Wurzeln in seiner Heimatstadt anzukn\u00fcpfen und den n\u00e4chsten Abschnitt seiner Laufbahn an der Spitze der traditionsreichen Compagnie zu gestalten. Die anstehende Renovierung des Opernhauses am Gustav-Adolfs-Torg begreift er dabei nicht nur als logistische Herausforderung, sondern ebenso als eine Chance f\u00fcr gestalterischen Aufbruch. Im Mittelpunkt seiner k\u00fcnftigen Arbeit sieht er den engen Austausch mit den T\u00e4nzerinnen und T\u00e4nzern sowie den k\u00fcnstlerischen und organisatorischen Teams des Hauses.<\/p>\n

Auch Fredrik Lindgren, Generaldirektor der K\u00f6niglichen Schwedischen Oper, sieht in Hellstr\u00f6ms Ernennung einen richtungsweisenden Schritt f\u00fcr das Ensemble. Seine langj\u00e4hrige Erfahrung in leitenden Positionen sowie sein ausgepr\u00e4gter k\u00fcnstlerischer Instinkt entspr\u00e4chen genau dem Profil, das man f\u00fcr die Weiterentwicklung der Compagnie gesucht habe. Mit Hellstr\u00f6m gewinne das Ballett einen Leiter, der in der Lage sei, die Compagnie in eine neue, vielversprechende Phase zu f\u00fchren.<\/p>\n

In eine \u00e4hnliche Richtung \u00e4u\u00dfert sich Alan Gilbert, K\u00f6niglicher Kapellmeister und Musikdirektor der K\u00f6niglichen Schwedischen Oper. Er sch\u00e4tzt Hellstr\u00f6m als K\u00fcnstler mit einer originellen k\u00fcnstlerischen Perspektive und gro\u00dfer gestalterischer Tiefe \u2013 Eigenschaften, die das Ensemble nicht nur bereichern, sondern auch auf h\u00f6chstem Niveau fordern und f\u00f6rdern werden. Besonders gespannt blickt Gilbert auf das gemeinsame Wirken im Rahmen des neuen B\u00fchnenprojekts Gasometer, dem er gro\u00dfes kreatives Potenzial attestiert.<\/p>\n
