Born on 10 May 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she leaves behind an impressive legacy as a dancer, choreographer, and Artistic Director Emeritus of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.<\/p>\n

From a young age, Jamison’s extraordinary talent was evident. She began her dance training at the age of six at the Judimar School of Dance, where she learned classical ballet and modern dance techniques under the guidance of Marion Cuyjet. Her career took off when she joined the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1965. There, she captivated audiences with her powerful presence and technical brilliance, making her one of the leading dancers of the company. A highlight of her career was the solo “Cry,” choreographed by Alvin Ailey in 1971 specifically for her. This performance, which addresses the pain and strength of Black women, became one of her trademarks and brought her worldwide recognition.<\/p>\n
