Her initial training took place at the Teatro alla Scala, followed by the Royal Ballet School. Representing the school, she participated in the Prix de Lausanne in 1980 and emerged as a Prize Winner. At the tender age of 19, she joined the Royal Ballet as a Principal Dancer.

From the outset of her career, Alessandra was given the opportunity to perform the most significant roles in the ballet repertoire. Her expressive performances quickly gained international recognition. She collaborated with numerous iconic figures in the world of ballet, including Sir Kenneth MacMillan, who choreographed new ballets for her, and Mikhail Baryshnikov, who invited her to join the American Ballet Theater as a principal dancer when she was just 22. She shared the stage with illustrious dance partners such as Wayne Eagling, David Wall, Anthony Dowell, Rudolf Nureyev, and Julio Bocca. In 1989, she embarked on a long artistic collaboration with Roland Petit, performing in his ballets worldwide.

In 1992, Alessandra Ferri became a permanent guest artist at Teatro alla Scala. The renowned Milanese theatre bestowed upon her the title of Prima Ballerina Assoluta, a historic title first created by Marius Petipa in 1894. Between 2008 and 2014, she directed the dance section of the Spoleto Festival. More recently, Wayne McGregor created the role of Virginia Woolf for her in Woolf Works, and Martha Clarke created the role of Lea in Cheri. She has also deepened her long-standing collaboration with John Neumeier, who created Duse for her in 2016. She has produced and performed in her own productions, notably Maurice Béjart’s L’Heure Exquise, in which she portrays the Beckettian heroine Winnie.

In recent years, Alessandra has passionately dedicated herself to coaching Principal dancers.
