They do nothing compared to us<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>Interview by Alessandro BIZZOTTO<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Her father is a former football player, and she still jokes with him about it. \u201c<em>They train two hours a day. For us dancers, two hours is peanuts!<\/em>\u201d. The first soloist of La Scala Ballet discusses fatigue, camaraderie and her love for her home region, and she reveals why she decided to come back to Italy after dancing ten years with the Semperoper Ballett.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We sit at a table of a caf\u00e9 overlooking La Scala Square at the end of a sunny Milan afternoon. I indulge in a soda, Alice Mariani orders a coffee with milk. \u201cI always mix the coffee with milk\u201d she tells me. \u201cI can easily give up the sugar, but I don\u2019t like coffee without milk\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Massa, in Tuscany, she graduated at La Scala Ballet School and immediately left Italy \u2013 she was offered a contract to join the Semperoper Ballett in Dresden, where she remained ten years, until moving back to Milan in 2021. That year she joined La Scala Ballet as a soloist. The following season she was promoted to first soloist. Since then, she already danced leading roles such as Kitri in <em>Don Quixote<\/em>, the title role in <em>Sylvia<\/em>, Clara in <em>The Nutacracker<\/em>, Tatjana in <em>Onegin<\/em>, Gamzatti in <em>La Bayad\u00e8re<\/em>, Medora in <em>Le Corsaire<\/em>, as well as ballets by Ji\u0159\u00ed Kyli\u00e1n, David Dawson, William Forsythe and George Balanchine.<\/p>\n<p>When we meet, she is just a few days away from a long-awaited debut \u2013 the one as Juliet in Kenneth MacMillan\u2019s <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em>. \u201cI have been dreaming for a long time to dance it\u201d, Alice says.
