Internationally acclaimed choreographer and former Artistic Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB), David Bintley CBE has today become Vice President of bbodance. Bintley agreed to join the 90-year-old organisation after watching bbodance students perform at their biggest annual event, Dance Days. “After that performance, I’m going to have to say yes,” he stated at the time.
\nAs Vice President, Bintley will\u00a0support the activity and development of bbodance at an international level.<\/strong>\u00a0Given his recent decision to step down from BRB in order to choreograph throughout the world, as well as the support and nurturance he’s known for granting young artists from all backgrounds, Bintley was a natural fit for this position.<\/strong>
\n“David gave us roles and opportunities no one else would have,” recalls bbodance Head of Membership & Communications, Julie Bowers,<\/strong> who was in the original cast of The Royal Ballet’s\u00a0Still Life at the Penguin Caf\u00e9<\/em> in 1988.\u00a0Bintley’s other famous works include\u00a0Hobson\u2019s Choice<\/em> (1989), Beauty and the Beast<\/em> (2003), and The King Dances<\/em> (2015).
\n“Be honest. Be true to yourself,”<\/strong> Bintley tells his artists, which resonates especially with\u00a0bbodance.\u00a0Founded by a kindred spirit,\u00a0the famous dancer and choreographer, Edouard Espinosa,<\/strong> who also travelled the world to teach and examine, the organisation is well-known for nurturing creativity through its\u00a0syllabi,\u00a0reflective teacher training,\u00a0and inspiring events.
\nThe clearest expression of this ethos is\u00a0Dance Days\u00a0itself,the event that exposed Bintley to bbodance and convinced him to come on board. Taking place annually in\u00a0the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, the event brings together students of all ages, dance teachers at all stages of their careers, and inspiring personalities to learn from each other and develop their creative vision.<\/p>\n

The event culminates with a Performance and Awards Ceremony<\/strong> that recognises the most talented students, which is what\u00a0Bintley attended this year. He was joined by Brandon Lawrence,<\/strong> an artist whose talent he’d\u00a0been nurturing for many years and whom he promoted to Principal shortly before leaving BRB. Like many notable dancers Bintley has worked with,\u00a0Lawrence is a former pupil of a bbodance school<\/strong> and a graduate of the organisation’s programme for its most talented students, the bbodance Scholars. As of last December, Lawrence is also the youngest Patron of bbodance.<\/p>\n

“Although I have spent most of my professional life in Classical Ballet, I had a broad dance training as a youngster <\/strong>and have a great appreciation for all dance disciplines. bbodance, with its wide provision of training not only in Ballet, but also in Jazz, Tap, Musical Theatre, Modern, and Contemporary and its ongoing development of teachers, seems to me like no other organisation, which is why I am attracted to it and proud to have been asked to become Vice President,” Bintley stated.<\/p>\n

“David joins us in the lead-up to our 90th anniversary,<\/a><\/strong> at a time when we’re modernising and reannouncing ourselves\u00a0to the world of dance. We are truly honoured to have his support,” stated bbodance CEO, Robin Bloor. <\/strong>bbodance President, Dame Beryl Grey, CH DBE<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>has also sent her congratulations.<\/p>\n

David Bintley joined <\/em>Sadler\u2019s Wells Royal Ballet<\/em><\/strong> after graduating from <\/em>The Royal Ballet School<\/em><\/strong> in 1976. He made his first ballet for the company two years later and became <\/em>Resident Choreographer<\/em><\/strong> in 1984. He was a noted character artist, particularly in the ballets of Ashton and De Valois, and won an Olivier Award for his performance in the title role of Petrushka. He left the company ten years later to join The Royal Ballet as Resident Choreographer and Principal Dancer at the invitation of <\/em>Sir Anthony Dowell\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and spent six further years at Covent Garden before leaving to freelance in 1992.<\/em><\/p>\n

In 1990 Sadler\u2019s Wells Royal Ballet relocated from London to the Midlands<\/strong> and became The Birmingham Royal Ballet.<\/strong> In 1995 Bintley succeeded Sir Peter Wright<\/strong> as Director, a post he went on to hold for twenty-four years. He was concurrently the Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Japan (NBJ)\u00a0<\/strong>from 2011 to 2014.<\/p>\n

In addition to the two Royal Ballet companies, Bintley\u2019s work has featured in the repertory of many of the world\u2019s great ballet companies\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/strong>Stuttgart, Munich, San Francisco, Houston, Boston, Sarasota, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Australian, Hong Kong, Bordeaux, Helsinki, P.A.C.T., Star Dancers, and NBJ in Tokyo. The recipient of numerous awards, he was made a CBE\u00a0<\/strong>in the\u00a02001 Queen’s Birthday Honours lists<\/strong> list in 2001 for services to dance.
