This international dance competition, held in beautiful Vancouver Canada, hosted over 200 competitors with a jury of internationally renowned choreographers, teachers and directors from some of the most distinguished companies in the world. These dance luminaries were joined by Peter Boal, <em>Artistic Director of the Pacific Northwest Ballet and Director of the Pacific Northwest Ballet School<\/em>, as the President of the Jury. Global Dance challenge (GDC) believes in providing a platform for aspiring dancers to have an extraordinary opportunity to showcase their talents. Chan Hon Goh, <em>Artistic Director of GDC and former principal ballerina of the National Ballet of Canada,<\/em> created a competition where students would receive professional coaching and masterclasses by world class teachers to cultivate artistic excellence. Global Dance Challenge offered 5 days of various masterclasses for all competitors including their coaching sessions.\u00a0 This year, GDC included marked masterclasses for candidates. Giving them an opportunity to showcase their technical strengths and artistic abilities in the studio as well as when performing onstage. Semi finals were for 2 days at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre on August 13 and 14<sup>th<\/sup> 2018. The finals and gala were on August 15<sup>th<\/sup>, 2018 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31334\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31334\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31334 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.danceforyou-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Ana-Wu_D1-solo-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.danceforyou-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Ana-Wu_D1-solo-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.danceforyou-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Ana-Wu_D1-solo-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.danceforyou-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Ana-Wu_D1-solo-2-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.danceforyou-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Ana-Wu_D1-solo-2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ana Wu, winns Gold for category D1 , received the Judges Special Award (for outstanding performance in 3 categories)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>All competitors had the opportunity to perform in the gala performance. The gala performance also included principal dancers from the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Karel Cruz and Lesley Rausch, who performed <em>Swan Lake Act 2- White Swan Pas De Deux<\/em> and a Neoclassical piece \u201c<em>After the Rain<\/em>\u201d choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon. The GDC gala also featured principal dancers from Ballet Manila, Katherine Barkman\u00a0and Joseph Phillips, who performed <em>Grand Pas Classique<\/em> and Simon Hoy\u2019s \u201c<em>The Distance between us<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31335\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31335\" style=\"width: 683px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-31335\" src=\"https:\/\/www.danceforyou-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tali-Elman_Canada_B3-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.danceforyou-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tali-Elman_Canada_B3-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.danceforyou-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tali-Elman_Canada_B3-300x450.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.danceforyou-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tali-Elman_Canada_B3-600x900.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.danceforyou-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tali-Elman_Canada_B3-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.danceforyou-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tali-Elman_Canada_B3-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.danceforyou-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tali-Elman_Canada_B3-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31335\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tali Elmann, 1st place in B3 solo, and received GDC Prix de Bronze trophy for B category. Jury awarded &#8220;Outstanding Choreography for Donald Thom&#8217;s choreography of Wadjda&#8217;s Journey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Among the many awards given, this year introduced the prestigious GDC Pix D\u2019Or trophy given out to the overall top 3 marks in category A, B, C &amp; D. As well as numerous scholarships were awarded to programs at Goh Ballet Academy, Kirov Ballet Academy, Shanghai Dance School and 11 competitors received full participation scholarships to the Ballet Beyond Borders Competition in January 2019. This year, Goh Ballet Academy\u2019s Ashley Coupal from Canada won gold in the professional ballet category (A) for a second year in a row as well as gold in the contemporary solo category(D). Ashley was awarded the Prix D\u2019Or trophy for both ballet and contemporary and was chosen for the \u201c<em>Outstanding Performer Award<\/em>\u201d. \u00a0Haruka Okayasu from China received silver for both ballet and contemporary as well as the Prix d&#8217;Argent trophy for both ballet and contemporary. An impressive group of 26 young dancers from the Jin Bao Long Ballet School, performed their ensemble piece \u201cSkating Waltz\u201d in perfect unison resulting in 1<sup>st<\/sup> place for an ensemble in the novice ballet category(B).
