Nur wenige Wochen nach seinem triumphalen Erfolg mit der Uraufführung von Kallirhoe an der Wiener Staatsoper präsentiert Alexei Ratmansky bereits sein nächstes großes Werk. Am 1. November feiert am Königlichen Dänischen Theater in Kopenhagen ein Werk Premiere, das in mehrfacher Hinsicht Geschichte schreibt: The Art of the Fugue – das neue Ballett des weltweit gefeierten ukrainischen Choreografen Alexei Ratmansky. Inspiriert von Johann Sebastian Bachs unvollendetem Spätwerk Die Kunst der Fuge, übersetzt Ratmansky die strenge Architektur der Musik in ein bewegtes System aus Linien, Spiegelungen und Variationen – ein choreografisches Universum aus Klang, Form und Stille.
„Das Stück ist überhaupt nicht politisch“, sagt Ratmansky. „Aber in meinem Herzen widme ich es der Ukraine.“
Ursprünglich war die Uraufführung 2022 in Moskau geplant. Doch nach Russlands Angriff auf die Ukraine kehrte Ratmansky, der in Kyjiw aufwuchs, seinem einstigen Wirkungsort den Rücken. Mit der Royal Danish Ballet Company fand er nun den Ort, an dem das Werk vollendet werden konnte – ein Akt künstlerischer Integrität und ein Bekenntnis zur Freiheit der Kunst.
„Ich bin zutiefst bewegt, dass Alexei gerade unsere Compagnie als Stimme für dieses Werk gewählt hat“, sagt Ballettdirektorin Amy Watson. „Angesichts der globalen Krisen und der Schwere unserer Zeit ist es umso bedeutender, dass diese Arbeit entsteht und das Publikum erreicht.“
Ratmansky, einer der prägenden Choreografen der Gegenwart, ist bekannt für seine Fähigkeit, die klassische Ballettsprache mit moderner Denkweise zu verbinden. In The Art of the Fugue verdichtet er die kontrapunktische Struktur Bachs zu reiner Bewegung – zu einem abstrakten, fast kosmischen Tanz in fünf Akten.
The Art of the Fugue ist ab dem 1. November erstmals auf der historischen Bühne des Royal Danish Theatre zu erleben – eine Weltpremiere, die nicht nur die Musikalität, sondern auch die moralische Tiefe der Kunst feiert.

The Art of the Fugue – Alexei Ratmansky’s Choreographic Response to the World Stage
Just weeks after his triumphant premiere of Kallirhoe at the Vienna State Opera, Alexei Ratmansky unveils his next major work.
On 1 November, the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen will host the premiere of a ballet that makes history on multiple levels: The Art of the Fugue, the latest creation by the world-renowned Ukrainian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky. Inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s unfinished late masterpiece, Die Kunst der Fuge, Ratmansky transforms the strict architecture of the music into a dynamic interplay of lines, reflections and variations – a choreographic universe of sound, form and silence.
“This piece is not political at all,” Ratmansky says. “But in my heart, I dedicate it to Ukraine.”
Originally scheduled to premiere in Moscow in 2022, Ratmansky – who grew up in Kyiv – left the city following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. With the Royal Danish Ballet Company, he has now found the company that could bring the work to completion – an act of artistic integrity and a testament to the freedom of art.
“I am deeply moved that Alexei chose our company as the voice for this work,” says Ballet Director Amy Watson. “Given the global crises and the weight of our times, it is all the more vital that this work is realised and reaches its audience.”
Ratmansky, one of the most influential choreographers of our time, is renowned for blending classical ballet vocabulary with contemporary thought. In The Art of the Fugue, he distils Bach’s contrapuntal structure into pure movement – an abstract, almost cosmic ballet in five acts.
The Art of the Fugue can be experienced for the very first time on 1 November on the historic stage of the Royal Danish Theatre – a world premiere that celebrates not only musicality but also the moral depth of art.
