Christopher Marney

London City Ballet Soar to New Heights

(🇬🇧)

By Louise RYRIE

Today’s interview with London City Ballet’s gracious artistic director Christopher Marney takes place poignantly on the two-year anniversary which marks the reformation of this unique company after a 30-year hiatus. And what a magnificent rebirth it has been so far.

Historical Beginnings and New Audiences

Watching London City Ballet (LCB) perform during their most recent tour revealed an underpinning bond between their dancers and discovering the small touring company’s dedication to reviving less familiar but important ballet works is fascinating. What a fabulous niche for a ballet company, and one that has always worked so well for London City Ballet which was originally founded by Harold King in 1978.

Today, Christopher Marney recalls his own childhood experiences growing up as a ballet student in the audience of King’s London City Ballet mixed bills – a blend of historical works plus new commissions, before its closure in 1996.
