The Istanbul State Opera and Ballet has a distinguished history that began in 1949, with its home at the Atatürk Cultural Centre – Türk Telekom Opera Hall, located in the vibrant Şişli district. A stone’s throw from Taksim and nestled in the lively Beyoğlu neighbourhood, this cultural landmark seats an impressive 2,040, providing ample space for high-calibre opera and ballet performances. The company of around 60 dancers performs both timeless classical masterpieces and innovative contemporary works.

Istanbul’s ballet scene is dynamic and diverse – a fascinating blend of tradition and innovation. As one of the city’s key institutions, the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet plays a pivotal role in presenting both classical ballet repertoires and cutting-edge modern dance productions. In addition, independent dance companies and festivals contribute to the city’s thriving arts scene, providing a platform for experimental works and creative collaborations. Known for their passion and inventiveness, Istanbul’s dancers attract artists from around the world. In particular, the Istanbul Opera and Ballet Theatre is part of a nationwide network that includes major cities such as Ankara and Izmir. This network promotes cultural exchange and collaboration across Turkey, ensuring that the performing arts reach a wider audience throughout the country.
