Zwei Wege, ein Preis: Die Clive Barnes Foundation zeichnet in diesem Jahr Patrick Gamble von der Paul Taylor Dance Company und Yoon Jung Seo vom American Ballet Theatre mit dem 16. Clive Barnes Award for Achievement in Dance aus. Verliehen wird der Preis am 19. Oktober 2026 in den Studios der Martha Graham Dance Company in New York.
Seit 2011 sucht ein vierzehnköpfiges Gremium aus Kritikerinnen und Fachleuten das ganze Jahr über nach genau diesem Moment: dem Auftritt, der mehr verspricht als eine einzelne starke Vorstellung. Beobachtungszeitraum diesmal: Juni 2025 bis Juli 2026.
Patrick Gamble ist in Queens aufgewachsen und lebt mit Alopezie. Mit fünf Jahren stand er zum ersten Mal an der Ailey School, tanzte später drei Spielzeiten bei Ailey II und schloss das BFA-Programm von Ailey/Fordham mit einem Doppelabschluss in Kunstgeschichte ab. Sein Bühnenrepertoire reicht von Robert Battle über Ohad Naharin bis William Forsythe und Rena Butler, dazu Auftritte an der Seite von Nona Hendryx und Mary J. Blige. Seit Sommer 2025 gehört er zur Paul Taylor Dance Company. Nebenbei modelt er für Vogue Italia und The New York Times und war in Gossip Girl sowie Saturday Night Live zu sehen – ein Tänzer, der sich in keine Schublade zwingen lässt.
Yoon Jung Seo kommt aus Gwangmyeong, Südkorea, ausgebildet an der Yewon School und der Seoul Arts High School. 2019 stand sie als Finalistin und Stipendiatin beim Prix de Lausanne auf einer der wichtigsten Bühnen für Nachwuchstänzerinnen weltweit – im selben Jahr, in dem sie zur Studio Company des American Ballet Theatre kam. 2021 wurde sie Apprentice, 2022 Mitglied des Corps de Ballet. Solopartien in Don Quixote, Der Nussknacker und Schwanensee folgten, dazu Rollen in Raymonda: Grand Pas Hongrois und Twyla Tharps Bach Partita. Im Juli 2026, kurz vor der Auszeichnung, wurde sie zur Solistin befördert.
Dritte Geehrte im Bereich Tanz ist India Hobbs (GALLIM Dance). Im Bereich Theater gehen die Preise an Jasmine Amy Rogers, Ben Levi Ross und Sam Tutty, die Journalistin Marina Harss erhält den Award for Achievement in Media and Journalism. Die Tanzpreise überreicht New York City Ballet-Principal Mira Nadon, umrahmt von Auftritten von Anna Zavelson und der ehemaligen Martha-Graham-Tänzerin Charlotte Landreau.
Clive Barnes Award 2026 goes to Patrick Gamble and Yoon Jung Seo
Two very different roads, one prize: the Clive Barnes Foundation has named Patrick Gamble of the Paul Taylor Dance Company and Yoon Jung Seo of American Ballet Theatre as this year’s recipients of the 16th Annual Clive Barnes Award for Achievement in Dance. The ceremony is set for 19 October at the Martha Graham Dance Company’s studios in New York.
Since 2011, a fourteen-member committee of critics and industry professionals has spent each season chasing the same thing: the performance that promises more than one good night on stage. This year’s watch ran from June 2025 to July 2026.
Patrick Gamble grew up in Queens and lives with alopecia. He first walked into The Ailey School at five, later danced three seasons with Ailey II, and graduated from the Ailey/Fordham BFA programme with a double major in Art History. His stage credits span Robert Battle, Ohad Naharin, William Forsythe and Rena Butler, alongside appearances with Nona Hendryx and Mary J. Blige. He joined the Paul Taylor Dance Company in summer 2025. Off stage, he models for Vogue Italia and The New York Times and has turned up in Gossip Girl and Saturday Night Live — a dancer who resists easy categorisation.
Yoon Jung Seo hails from Gwangmyeong, South Korea, trained at the Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School. In 2019, she was a finalist and scholarship winner at the Prix de Lausanne, one of ballet’s most closely watched stages for emerging dancers — the same year she joined American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company. She became an apprentice in 2021 and entered the corps de ballet in 2022. Solo roles followed in Don Quixote, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake, along with parts in Raymonda: Grand Pas Hongrois and Twyla Tharp’s Bach Partita. In July 2026, weeks before this honour, she was promoted to Soloist.
The third dance honouree this year is India Hobbs of GALLIM Dance. On the theatre side, the award goes to Jasmine Amy Rogers, Ben Levi Ross and Sam Tutty, while critic Marina Harss receives the Award for Achievement in Media and Journalism. New York City Ballet principal Mira Nadon will present the dance awards, with performances from Anna Zavelson and former Martha Graham dancer Charlotte Landreau, followed by a reception and silent auction.
