The second edition of the international ballet conference Positioning Ballet will be held at Dutch National Opera & Ballet on 16. 17 February 2019. Positioning Ballet reflects Dutch National Ballet’s intention to encourage collaboration and exchange between leading international ballet companies while acknowledging their differences.
The first edition hosted over 100 participants, including 30 artistic directors of world-renowned ballet companies, who came together at Dutch National Opera & Ballet to discuss diversity, heritage and identity in ballet. During this second edition, we would like to discuss the challenges faced by artistic directors today. What sort of leadership is required nowadays? The society in which ballet resonates today is different to the world in which the art of ballet originated. For this reason, while recognising the diversity of practices in the ballet world, the international ballet conference address the following topics:
– What is the working culture that ballet would like to embody?
– How can ballet remain relevant to the public in the 21st century?
On the Saturday evening of this weekend conference, Dutch National Ballet will present David Dawson’s new work Requiem (world premiere on 9 February 2019), created to new music by the renowned British composer Gavin Bryars. On Sunday afternoon, we will perform the programme Ode to the Master, featuring four ballets from the oeuvre of Hans van Manen: On the Move, 5 Tangos, Sarcasm and Symphonieën der Nederlanden.
